Reference Library & Archives

In the Annex building, we have a Reference Library & Archives open to anyone looking to do research. There are thousands of books, technical manuals, periodicals, unpublished documents, photographs, maps, technical drawings and much more. Services such as photocopying, scanning, online research, etc. can all be provided by staff upon request.

Library Collection:

The Shearwater Aviation Museum library collection is a special interest aviation collection, but also contains materials on Canadian Military History, general aviation and a small children's collection. The reference section does not circulate, but most materials are available for a three-week loan period. Government issued identification is required to borrow materials. Regretfully, the library holdings database is not yet available online.

Search the Archives:

The Shearwater Aviation Museum has recently started uploading descriptions of archival holdings to Memory Nova Scotia, an online archival database for archival institutions in Nova Scotia. While initial content is currently slim, descriptions are being added regularly, and this material is searchable. https://memoryns.ca/shearwater-aviation-museum

Research Assistance:

Patrons can visit the Archives and Library in person between Monday and Friday, from 10 am - 5 pm, but recommend calling to make an appointment with a staff member.  Research can also be conducted on your behalf by museum staff and volunteers; however, a fee for service applies as follows:

  • Research: $15.00/hr
  • Photocopies: $0.25/page (b x w)
  • Photograph reproduction (print or digital): $20.00/image

You can reach the staff at our Library by phone at (902) 720-4096 or by e-mail at library@shearwateraviationmuseum.ca.
